Successful intervention depends on assessment and accurate diagnosis of a student's reading strengths and difficulties.

Successful reading involves decoding and comprehending. Based on assessment and diagnosis of a student's reading strengths and difficulties a systematic and sequential program will be developed. The program will be based on a combination of the following:

Decoding skills:
  • Phonological awareness
  • Sound/symbol correspondence
  • Phonic rules
  • Word recognition
  • Word attack
  • Oral reading - accuracy and fluency
Comprehension skills:
  • Vocabulary development
  • Concept development
  • Grammatical structure
  • Semantic relationship between words and sentences
  • Context cues
  • Making connections
  • Using prior knowledge/experience
  • Visualising techniques
  • Making predictions
For older students:
  • Questioning
  • Making judgements
  • Summarising
  • Paraphrasing
  • Inferential thinking skills
  • Critical thinking skills

Progress evaluation:

Formal on-going appraisal of a student's progress will be carried out by means of standardised assessment in:

  • Oral reading accuracy
  • Oral reading fluency
  • Comprehension of text
